Mt. Shasta is the second highest volcano in the US. It rises 14,162 feet and at its base is more than 17 miles in diameter. It is covered by eight glaciers. Shasta is often capped by a lenticular cloud, as in this photo. Mt. Shasta is an active volcano. It last erupted in 1786. Some Shasta Folklore Some believe that the mountain is inhabited by a mysterious people -- the Lemurians -- that came from Sirius and Alpha Centauri, lived on the continent of Lemuria before it sank, and now live deep inside the mountain.
